Why Do You Need a Domestic Contract in Ontario?

The benefits of writing out domestic contracts are much like any other contract. It provides clarity for both parties, prevents conflict later on, and can be used if there is ever a dispute. Domestic contracts can be a better alternative to going to court if you have a low conflict relationship. These contracts keep the details of your arrangement from being shared with others.

The two most important aspects of a domestic contract are defining who is financially responsible for what and deciding how each partner will contribute towards household duties. Domestic contracts must have a starting date so all tasks can be clearly defined.

The agreement should also specify how long it will remain in effect. Most domestic contracts include other details such as determining the use of joint bank accounts and if both people should be responsible for each other's debts.
